House Trap Replacement

Your house trap is a U-shaped pipe that helps to isolate the home plumbing from the city sewage line by using its unique shape to “trap” inappropriate material flushed down the house sewage line. The house trap typically sits in the basement of your home and is fitted with a screw-in-type clean-out plug.
The house trap is a plumbing fixture in the home that is often overlooked. However, if your sewer or house trap is damaged or defective in any way, it can cause a good amount of frustration. The most common cases are ones in which the plug for the house trap (brass or lead or rubber caps) are defective and let in sewer gases or insects (this is typically related to a broken pipe somewhere along the line).
If you suspect that the house trap is plugged or clogged or backed-up, it is always recommended that you call in a professional. The major risk typically comes from situations where the sewage line from the city is backed up and under pressure. By releasing the plug, you may be inviting an unwanted amount of backed-up sewer water into your basement.
Note: if you begin to unscrew the house trap plug and water starts to flow out of the trap – replace the trap plug and call in a professional.
